About

Freehand is a literary zine that aims to showcase poems, stories, and other written works by independent, not as well known writers.  Eventually, Freehand would like to expand to other art forms, like music and photography, but that is still in the works.

Freehand is distributed two ways: online and in print.  You are looking at Freehand’s online presence.  On this website, you can read all the stories and poems that will be in the print edition of the zine.  We strongly encourage readers to comment and start discussions.

I first conceived of Freehand when I was unemployed.  I wanted to start some sort of audiobook/podcast project, along the lines of Escape Pod.  Along the way, the idea evolved into a zine, where writers who had the ability and inclination to record their submission would be encouraged to do so.  I hope the idea takes off, and that future issues will have even more participation!

What is a zine?

Zines tend to be small circulation, non-commerical publications that usually adhere to a DIY and indie ethic.  Zines can be political, personal, humorous, creative, nonfictional, etc…

Fall of Autumn Press has a very good overview of what zines are and can be, if you would like more information.

What is Creative Commons?

Continuing Wikipedia’s description, zines “are often not explicitly copyrighted and there is a strong belief among many zine creators that the material within should be freely distributed.”

Freehand is no different.  Most of the content on this website and zine are shared under a Creative Commons license.  For more info on Creative Commons, visit their website.
